Tart Cherry Juice benefits
Tart cherry juice could help alleviate ulcerative colitis.
In a study published in Life, researchers randomly assigned 37 patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis to receive 30-milliliter Montmorency tart cherry juice supplementation or placebo twice per day for six weeks.
The researchers found that compared with the placebo group, the tart cherry juice group experienced improvements in their inflammatory biomarkers, symptom severity and quality of life. However, those who consumed tart cherry juice had a significantly higher intake of sugar compared with those in the placebo group — especially considering prior research establishing a potential correlation between inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes.
The findings suggested that tart cherry juice could promote histologic healing and reductions in intestinal inflammation. The researchers concluded that tart cherry juice could be used as a complementary therapeutic approach in this patient population.
